This Blooming Business

August 2, 2015

I am a member of the September 2013 e-course Bloom True class, taught by Flora Bowley.  We (the other students and I) have continued to share our work and encourage each other in both art and life.  As we approach the two year mark for starting the Bloom True journey, I have some recent insights to share.

Change is messy.  Growing is hard.  And "blooming", the process of unfolding, can be a hairy business.  Like this poppy flower that begins as as a fuzzy, muted pod, we often begin a transformation in a less, shall we say attractive, state.  Caterpillars and all that.

When we do finally transform, it may not be what we thought.  Stuff happens along the way (draughts, slugs, negligent waterers) that shape the outcome.

We can embrace this different outcome, marvel in its unexpectedness, or stay home and cry.

I choose to marvel.

Today’s art piece was delivered to the Children’s Home Society for their spring auction. It’s a pleasure to support their mission. I poured extra joy and love into this one!

This one began in chaos, and only finished taking shape today. I love the house tucked into the hillside, under a warm sun and blue sky. Ambiguous plant life dots the field. New original.

This one started with some monotyping, some direct painting, and finishes up with layers of colored tissue. An exploration of multiple transparent layers!

This new original has layers and layers of sheer color to capture the way light bounces around on snow. From a walk, when I looked up a snow covered hill, and saw a pinked sunset sky casting d
View fullsize “Welcome to Your Life” #wildandwonderful Spent last night in the studio painting with only my favorite colors, rules be damned. This is that conversation. #leemclart18x12
View fullsize “Trees Whisper Hello Moon” New original! This one has many layers built up to capture movement, transition, and moonlight shimmer. Forest green (ha!) trees reach for a sky starting to fill with stars. #24x30leemclart
